3D-Forensics/FTI — Mobile high-resolution 3D-Scanner and 3D data analysis for forensic evidence fast track to innovation

Public validation datasets

The performance of the 3D scanner and analysis software was evaluated in a developmental validation process following the Forensic Science Regulator. The goal of validation is to demonstrate and document that the results from both can be relied upon in forensic science activities. In nine test cases and connected subtests, specifications such as accuracy and repeatability as well as the influence of disturbance variables were investigated. A part of the process was also a “round robin” test series supported by forensic users to determine the reproducibility.

The complete process and results are documented in the Validation Report. 3D datasets from the tests are available in open formats E57 (unit m) and OBJ (unit mm) for free download.

In detail, the public datasets include the following test cases:

  • Tests on accuracy and repeatability of 3D scanner resolution (TC_1a)
  • Tests on reproducibility (round robin) of 3D scanner resolution (TC_1b)
  • DOWNLOAD DATASET (TC_1a and TC_1b)

  • Tests on accuracy and repeatability of colour to 3D mapping (TC_3a)
  • Tests on reproducibility (round robin) of colour to 3D mapping (TC_3b)
  • DOWNLOAD DATASET (TC_3a and TC_3b)

  • Tests on accuracy and repeatability at 3D scanning of footwear and impressions (TC_5a)
  • Tests on reproducibility (round robin) at 3D scanning of footwear and impressions (TC_5b)
  • DOWNLOAD DATASET (TC_5a and TC_5b)
